The Message of the Cross: Power in Suffering

In today first read this passage deeply touched my heart, one that I believe contains a profound truth—yet it is a truth that, as a reluctant saint or even a new believer, can be difficult to accept or fully understand. It is the concept of suffering, and its necessity in our spiritual journey.

The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
(1 Corinthians 1:18)

At first glance, this verse may seem perplexing. The idea that something as brutal and painful as the crucifixion could be considered the "power of God" is not easily grasped. In fact, for many, it appears as utter foolishness. How could the suffering of one man, so many centuries ago, hold any relevance or power in our lives today?

But for those who have experienced the transformative grace of God, this passage is a reminder of the profound mystery of faith. It speaks to the paradox at the heart of Christianity: that through suffering, we find life; through death, we find resurrection; and through the cross, we find salvation.

Reflection

As a reluctant saint, I’ve often struggled with the idea that suffering is not only an inevitable part of life but also a necessary one. It’s natural to resist pain and to seek comfort, but the cross reminds us that there is purpose in our suffering. It is through our trials and tribulations that we are shaped, molded, and refined. In our darkest moments, we are invited to share in the suffering of Christ, and in doing so, we are drawn closer to Him.

This doesn’t mean that we should seek out suffering, nor should we romanticize it. Rather, we are called to accept it when it comes, trusting that God is at work even in our pain. The cross, once a symbol of shame and defeat, has become for us a symbol of hope and victory. It teaches us that no suffering is wasted and that God can bring good out of even the most difficult circumstances.

Application

If you find yourself struggling with the concept of suffering, take comfort in knowing that you are not alone. It is a difficult truth to embrace, but as we grow in faith, we come to understand that our suffering can have meaning and purpose. Lord, in our moments of suffering, help us to see beyond the pain to the deeper work You are doing in our hearts. Give us the grace to unite our sufferings with those of Christ, and to trust that You are bringing about something good even when we cannot see it.
