Embracing Mary as Our Patron Saint: A Journey from Reluctance to Trust

Dear Friends,
I am deeply humbled and excited to share with you that the Blessed Virgin Mary, the epitome of grace, faith, and unwavering obedience to God, is now the patron saint of Reluctant Saint. This decision is one that resonates deeply with the very essence of our journey together. While Mary gave herself over to God instantly, saying “Yes” without hesitation, many of us find ourselves struggling, hesitating, and wrestling with our own faith.
The Perfect “Yes” vs. Our Reluctant Journey
Mary’s life was marked by a profound trust in God’s plan. When the angel Gabriel appeared to her, she didn’t waver or question God’s will. Instead, she offered her whole being to His divine purpose, knowing that her life would never be the same. In contrast, we often find ourselves caught in a tug-of-war between our desires and God’s calling. We struggle with doubts, fears, and the reluctance to fully surrender to His will.
Yet, it is precisely this struggle that makes Mary the perfect patron for us. She reminds us that it is possible to move beyond our fears and hesitations. Her example teaches us that with God’s grace, even the most reluctant heart can be transformed into one that fully trusts in His divine plan.
Learning from Mary’s Grace
As we continue this journey together, let us look to Mary as our guide and inspiration. She shows us that the path to holiness is not always easy, but it is always possible with God’s help. When we feel hesitant or unsure, let us remember her courage and faith, and ask for her intercession to strengthen us in our own spiritual walk.
Just as Mary’s “Yes” brought about the greatest gift to humanity—Jesus Christ—our small steps of faith and trust can bring about transformation in our lives and the lives of those around us. We may not be perfect, and we may struggle, but we are on this journey together, and with Mary’s guidance, we can grow closer to God every day.
A Personal Reflection
For many of us, including myself, the idea of fully surrendering to God’s will can feel overwhelming. I’ve often found myself holding back, reluctant to give everything over to Him. But as I look to Mary, I am reminded that it is in these moments of surrender that we find true freedom and peace. Her example is a constant source of encouragement, showing us that God’s grace is always sufficient, even in our weakest moments.
As we honor Mary as our patron saint, let us strive to emulate her virtues: her humility, her trust, and her unwavering faith. Let us allow her to guide us closer to her Son, Jesus, as we continue to walk this path together.
Thank you for being a part of this journey with me. Let’s continue to support and uplift each other as we grow in faith, love, and trust in God’s plan for our lives.
Peace and love to you all,
Scott O'Neill
