Daily Reflections: "Taking Up Our Cross"

Scott O’Neill

Reading Overview:

Today’s readings remind us of the seriousness of following God and the sacrifices it entails. The prophet Nahum declares the downfall of Nineveh, while Jesus teaches about the necessity of self-denial, taking up our cross, and following Him.

Reflection:

Following Christ requires a willingness to embrace sacrifice and put God’s will above our own. Jesus calls us to deny ourselves, recognizing that true life is found not in gaining worldly things but in aligning ourselves with God's purposes. This passage challenges us to consider what we value most and whether we are ready to surrender it for the sake of following Christ.

Application:

We are called to daily self-denial, choosing God’s will over our own desires. This means prioritizing our spiritual life, even when it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient. By embracing our crosses with faith, we participate in the redemptive work of Christ and find true fulfillment.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, give me the strength to deny myself and take up my cross daily. Help me to follow You with a willing heart, trusting that in losing my life for Your sake, I will find it. Amen.
