Jesus heals a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath. The man extends his healed hand in gratitude while the Pharisees observe with disapproval in the background. The image highlights divine mercy and the triumph of compassion over rigid legalism.

Daily Reflections: Doing Good on the Sabbath

Scott O’Neill

Reading Overview:
In today’s readings, St. Paul addresses the need to cleanse oneself from immorality and live with sincerity and truth. The Gospel recounts Jesus healing a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath, challenging the Pharisees’ rigid interpretation of the law.

Reflection:
The Gospel reminds us that the spirit of God’s law is love and mercy. Jesus’ actions show that doing good and saving life should never be limited by rigid observance of rules. This calls us to prioritize compassion and kindness in our actions, even when faced with opposition.

Application:
Reflect on how you observe rules and traditions in your faith. Are there times when strict adherence might hinder acts of love and mercy? Seek to align your actions with the compassionate example of Christ.

Prayer:
Lord, grant us the wisdom to understand and follow Your laws with love and mercy. Help us to prioritize compassion in our actions, following Christ’s example, and honoring You in all we do. Amen.
